Birth is a natural life process; a profound experience for women, babies and families. Midwives strive to support Biodynamic Birth by providing care that is professional and individualized, with limited interventions, as defined by the Midwives Model of Care. We believe that women have the right to choose where and with whom they give birth and to be provided with sufficient information to make true Informed Choices regarding their own care and the care of their baby.

Biodynamic Birth
The Biodynamic Birth Model is a type of care which emphasizes both the wide range of normal, physiological processes in childbirth (bio) and the individual woman, infant(s), and families in our care (dynamic).  We believe in women’s bodies and their ability to give birth.   We encourage the normal physical, hormonal, emotional and intuitive processes which take place during pregnancy and birth.  We honor individual, family, cultural, and spiritual/religious values of all types in our care.  We believe that all people in our care should be encouraged and respected in each of their decisions.

The Midwives Model of CareThe Midwives Model of Care* includes:
• Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
• Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
• Minimizing technological interventions
• Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention
The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma and cesarean section.

Informed Choice
Informed choice is the practice of providing the client with complete information about the treatments, interventions, tests and screening, or other procedures that are available. The decision about what to do in each situation is up to the client. For each informed choice, we encourage our clients to seek out any additional information they feel necessary in order to make a well informed decision. We support our clients in each of their decisions.

Paragraph.

Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)
A Certified Professional Midwife is a knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the midwifery model of care. The CPM is the only international credential that requires knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital settings.

Direct-Entry Midwife (DEM)
A Direct-Entry Midwife is an independent practitioner educated in the discipline of midwifery through self-study, apprenticeship, a midwifery school, or a college- or university-based program distinct from the discipline of nursing. A direct-entry midwife is trained to provide the Midwives Model of Care to healthy women and newborns throughout the childbearing cycle primarily in out-of-hospital settings.
